Yesterday afternoon, Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, gave birth to a baby boy.
What this means is that a lot of people who bet on the baby being a girl are going to be out of pocket and very unhappy.
It also means that there’s a new royal baby, soon to be followed by endless photographs and stories about it doing ordinary baby things.
According to Channel 24, Meghan’s mom, Doria Ragland, was present for the birth of her first grandchild. The rest of the royal family, including Queen Elizabeth, were then informed of the birth.
Sussex Royal confirmed on Instagram that Meghan has given birth to a baby boy.
“We are pleased to announce that Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Sussex welcomed their firstborn child in the early morning on 6 May, 2019. Their Royal Highnesses’ son weighs 7lbs. 3oz.”
While we wait to find out what they’ve named it, let’s hand over to proud dad Harry for the birth announcement:
Buckingham Palace also made a formal announcement. The crowds were loving it.
The arrival of the baby changes the line of succession, reports TIME.
In 2013, the U.K. Parliament passed a law allowing succession of siblings to be decided by age, rather than gender. The previous rules meant that an older sister would come further down the pecking order than her younger brother.
The new baby is seventh in line after Prince Harry.
Here’s a handy video detailing the line of succession:
Mom and baby are healthy and happy.
