Tony Yengeni’s Joke About Necklacing Herman Mashaba Didn’t Go To Plan

Convicted fraudster and ANC national executive committee member Tony Yengeni reckons that Herman Mashaba is due for a necklacing. That hasn't endeared him to many.

The months leading up to a national election are always dangerous, and politicians are prone to getting nasty in their attempts to win over voters.

Even by the lowest standards of what is acceptable, ANC national executive committee member Tony Yengeni’s tweet over the weekend is utterly disgusting.

The township of Alexandra in Jozi has seen widespread protest actions over the past week, with residents angered by decades of poor service delivery.

According to drunk driver and convicted fraudster Tony, blame for that failure lies at the feet of Joburg mayor Herman Mashaba, with the DA having won control of Gauteng back in 2016.

Let’s see Tony’s tweet from early Saturday morning:

Oh, just a casual necklacing reference. In a country with a history like ours, and with a vigilante problem like ours, it’s just a serious swing and miss from a serial attention-seeker.

The replies to his tweet show that there are some Twitter users who won’t get fooled again. My favourite is this video rebuke:

Yeah, George W. dodging a shoe thrown by an Iraqi journalist back in 2008 will never get old.

The rebukes go on and on:

Yes, there is the odd tweet in support of Yengeni, presumably from South Africans who support mass looting of the country’s finances, but for the large part, it hasn’t gone well.

Then there’s Times LIVE with the legal results:

Solly Msimanga, the Democratic Alliance’s candidate for Gauteng premier, on Sunday laid criminal charges against the ANC.

The former Tshwane mayor accused the ruling party of inciting violence in Alexandra. Msimanga said the recent protests were organised by the ANC as a political ploy to influence the upcoming elections.

In a statement, the ANC dismissed Msimanga’s claims as a “cheap stunt” by the DA.

Cool, but jokes about necklacing are alright.

Gotcha.

Tragically, at the end of all the nastiness on social media, the residents of Alexandra remain without acceptable service delivery.
