Surfers are always after the ultimate wave, and they’ll travel to far-flung corners of the world to find it.
One place I wouldn’t have thought to check is the mighty Zambezi River on the Zambian side, because it’s a landlocked country far removed from the coastline.
Now, in a very cool new video collaboration between Cars.co.za and surf magazine Zigzag, a team of South African surfers set off in search of a rare and powerful wave that is uniquely African.
Here’s the video description from the Cars.co.za YouTube video:
With surfboards strapped to the roof of a first-generation Toyota Fortuner, the crew including talented surfers, Koby Oberholzer and ex-World Championship Tour campaigner, Royden Bryson, set off from Durban on an unorthodox surf trip that would take them across South Africa, Botswana and finally, Zambia, covering well over 6 000 km’s on this journey…
The elusive standing wave on the Zambezi River is a rare phenomenon that hardly ever breaks, but when it does, it’s raw, powerful and laced with danger. Armed with life vests, helmets and Nyami-Nyamis for protection in the gorge and on the river, Koby and Royden took a leap of faith and scored the wave of a lifetime.
Off you go then, chaps:
It’s a damn shame that the wave’s future is being threatened, but at least these two surfers got to give it a bash before that happens.
