“I mean, I know Apartheid was bad, but like, at least we didn’t have load shedding.”
“Remember the good old days, when the kids could play safely in the streets?”
Yeah, I’m not saying you’ve heard one of those exact quotes at some point in the not too distant past, but you know exactly what I’m talking about.
So does Top Billing host and media mogul Janez Vermeiren, who took to Twitter to voice his frustrations with white people who throw around phrases like those above.
As in the recent case of Danny K, who also came under fire for his white privilege (or “priveldge”, as so many were quick to point out) tweet, Janez has also faced a backlash.
First, the tweets:
I mean, seems pretty straightforward, doesn’t it?
You’re welcome to head over to Janez’s Twitter account to see the backlash for yourself, but TimesLIVE picked out a few standard responses:
Something tells me HFH the Nam man wasn’t a leading voice in the anti-Apartheid movement.
Here comes the “good old days” reference:
Yes, Tina, but in the “good old days” an overwhelming majority of this country’s citizens were denied the most basic human rights.
Our crime situation is horrid, the ANC has spent 25 years running the country into the ground, enriching a select few at the expense of those who need it most, and we’re going to be load shed for many, many months to come.
But surely, surely, that’s still better than the dehumanisation of close to 90% of the people who call this country home?
Janez reckons it is:
Agreed, but we also need to educate woke white South Africans on the spelling of “privilege”. This cannot continue.
Here’s a little tip – if your response to people saying that things are better now than they were under Apartheid is the use of the word “snowflake”, you really are missing the point.
Look up something called ’empathy’ and have a little think about the way you look at the world.
