Bonnie and Clyde have gone down in history as one of the world’s most famous crime couples, and have consequently been the subject of a number of cinematic and other pop culture tributes over the years.
They were memorably portrayed by Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway in Arthur Penn’s classic 1967 film, and they were the subject of a miniseries in 2013.
They’ve also been the subject of a number of songs by Beyonce, Taylor Swift, Quavo, Gucci Mane and Ariana Grande.
Now Netflix is getting on the Bonnie and Clyde bandwagon with a new film, The Highwaymen, dedicated to the men who hunted down and killed the iconic duo.
Ride or die:
As you can see, in this version of events, Bonnie and Clyde aren’t the alluring anti-establishment heroes immortalised in pop culture.
Instead, reports TIME, the film tells the story through the eyes of the two officers, Frank Hamer and Maney Gault (played by Kevin Costner and Woody Harrelson). In this version, which takes more than a few liberties with history, Bonnie and Clyde are a pair of psychopathic killers leaving a trail of blood and carnage across America.
It looks entertaining, but it isn’t accurate, so take it with a pinch of salt. Jeff Guinn, who wrote the biography Go Down Together: The True, Untold Story of Bonnie and Clyde, had the following to say about the new depiction:
While the popular conception of Bonnie and Clyde depicts them as grandiose bank robbers, the truth was more mundane. “They were small-time crooks,” Guinn said.
The Barrow Gang mostly robbed gas stations and convenience stores; they would even break into gumball machines to collect the change.
I’m sure historical accuracy has its place, but gumball-machine-robbing-small-time-crooks wouldn’t make a very entertaining film, would it?
The Highwaymen airs on March 29.
