Earlier this week we covered Eureka, a new ‘whites only’ town that Adriaan Nieuwoudt is trying to set up in the Northern Cape.
If the name strikes you as familiar, that’s probably because that’s the same guy who ran one of South Africa’s most infamous pyramid schemes in the 1980s, and was subsequently jailed for diamond theft.
Looks like he’s going to struggle, though, because local government is understandably not enthused with the idea.
Eureka seems to be aligned with the ideals of Orania, the (in)famous town also located in the Northern Cape, that many right-wingers claim is misunderstood, both by the South African people and those abroad.
Jonas Nilsson, a Swedish journalist, author and filmmaker, decided to head to Orania to have a look for himself.
Before we go any further, we should point out that Nilsson isn’t exactly objective. This from the website for his initiative, The Boer Project:
The purpose is to highlight a plight that is not being covered by the mainstream media outlets. It is the plight of the Boer’s in South Africa…
Our aim is to follow up on the political and social development, and to give those people that are not being heard a voice through this platform.
OK, so he’s a right-winger, and The Boer Project’s first doccie was titled South Africa: A Reverse Apartheid?. We know where he stands.
Nilsson’s latest effort is titled Orania | Homeland for Whites in South Africa. Whilst its slant is clear, it does offer a look inside Orania, with many of the town’s notable names speaking on camera.
Off we go:
Sometimes I get the impression that the kind of people who want to live in Orania probably aren’t all that lekker to be around, and we should be happy they choose to move elsewhere.
A word of advice – don’t head into the comments section of that video, because it really is a cesspool.
