It’s tough not to love Cape Town City FC.
They were only formed back in 2016, but have already landed silverware, achieved a number of respectable league finishes, and become the city’s favourite team.
Sorry, Ajax Cape Town, but you know it’s true.
Plus, whoever runs their Twitter account is on the money.
The team currently sits in fourth place on the PSL log, having beaten Maritzburg United 3-2 over the weekend, but it’s the conduct of the head coach, Benni (in the area) McCarthy, that has come under closer scrutiny.
Last time we spoke about Benni, he was screaming ‘jou ma se p**s’, and this time he’s getting physical, with footage showing him pushing a member of the Maritzburg United coaching staff.
Why are football managers so melodramatic? You don’t see cricket or rugby managers and coaches involved in shoving matches.
Probably because most football managers were once players, and are thus used to behaving like complete prima donnas.
First up, here’s the shove, which came after the players on the field had argued over a potentially dangerous tackle:

Nothing more than handbags, really, but there were some uglier scenes in the tunnel.
Benni claims he played the role of peacemaker, and he can be seen emerging from the fracas below:

Wow, Benni’s really out there coaching in jorts. Not sure how I feel about that.
For what it’s worth, Maritzburg coach Eric Tinkler isn’t impressed with the referees or the opposition. Below from the Citizen:
Tinkler blamed the referee for apparently losing control of the game, leading to the fight.
“The ball goes out for a throw-in and our player [De Reuck] goes to fetch the ball. The City player‚ [Matthew] Rusike‚ throws the ball away and it is only normal‚ out of frustration‚ that he is going to push the guy. It’s only normal. What does it lead to? My player getting a second yellow card and sent-off. Did Rusike get a card? No. Then you’ve got the analyst [Jacobs] also coming and tripping and pulling my player over. What is he doing there?
“I was disappointed with what happened there with the officiating. He [Qongqo] lost control of the game.”
Whatever the cause, it’s not really the kind of scene you want to see in a professional match.
Then again, at least none of the players completely undermined their manager and refused to be subbed.
