Every now and again a movie with a South African connection cracks the big time, but there are few movies in recent times that feature as many rerige South African accents and memories as Searching for Sugar Man.
It’s a beautiful piece of storytelling, focusing on the mysterious artist known as Rodriguez, and how one South African man was determined to track him down.
That man is Stephen “Sugar” Segerman (seen above), and as the owner of the renowned Cape Town record store, Mabu Vinyl, he’s made a career out of tracking down music and musicians from years gone by.
Now he’s turned his attention towards famous South African musician James Stewart, in a new show dubbed ‘A Spoonful of Sugar and James‘, as these two old tjoms share their respective stories, and play and sing some great Rodriguez and South African classic songs.
For those who don’t know, James is a multiple SAMA award-winning, Emmy-nominated, chart-topping singer-songwriter, who cut his teeth in classical music with the usual childhood distaste, and then “surfed passionately and messed around with synthesizers” in his early teens.
The following decade would see him form his own band, abandon a law career and take a leap into the great unknown. As singer-songwriter for The Usual, he achieved fame with enduring classics like ‘The Shape That I’m In’ and ‘Like A Vision’.
In the years that followed, ‘Shine’, ‘A Man Like Me’, and many other solo hits have found their way into hearts and homes across South Africa.
Segerman, since he watched Searching for Sugar Man take home the 2013 Oscar for Best Documentary Feature, has travelled around South Africa, and overseas, giving talks and answering questions about the whole Rodriguez story.
He attended the Oscars ceremony in 2013, followed by the publishing of his best-selling book in 2015, titled ‘Sugar Man – The Birth, Death and Resurrection of Sixto Rodriguez’, co-written with his fellow ‘musical detective’ in the story, Craig Bartholomew Strydom.
Now, in what is a unique opportunity, you can listen to these two musical journeymen connect the dots between their respective adventures on February 28 at Café Roux, in Noordhoek.
It promises to be an evening you don’t want to miss, with these two wily old masters rolling back the years to entertain the crowd.
You can find all of the details for the evening here.
Also, if you haven’t yet watched Searching for Sugar Man, consider that your homework.
