If you’re a late-night show covering politics in America, it’s pretty darn tough to avoid talking about Donald Trump.
That’s a large part of Trevor Noah’s job description on The Daily Show, whether people like it or not, so here we are.
Also, sorry, Trevor, you didn’t crack this year’s list of ‘100 most influential young South Africans’, but I reckon you’ll be OK.
Our famous comedy export is talking about Donald’s appearance in El Paso, Texas, again, which is the same rally where the topic of the president owning a dog came up.
This time, the focus was on “Bricky the Border Wall”, which was touted as the “official mascot” of Trump’s wall, according to the Daily Beast:
[Bricky] spent the afternoon interviewing Trump supporters who were eager to talk to him about why they want to “keep all the illegals out” of the country and prevent Venezuela from selling fake passports to ISIS, among other unhinged conspiracy theories…
Bricky was so convincing that he ended up in Jimmy Fallon’s Tonight Show monologue the previous night, before anyone knew he was a Daily Show plant.
“Someone actually showed up to the rally wearing a wall costume,” Fallon told viewers, showing them a photo of the mascot. “Looks like Spongebob’s conservative uncle,” he added. “He was having fun until someone dressed as the Kool-Aid man tried to run right through him.”
That’s a bit embarrassing for Fallon, although I find his show cringeworthy at the best of times.
The same can be said for the in-studio opening below, although once Bricky starts interviewing Trump supporters from the two-minute mark, the entertainment value kicks in:
The term “thick as a brick” comes to mind.
