Concussions in sport are no laughing matter, which is something that former Springbok Pat Lambie can attest to.
Having played 56 tests for the Boks, Lambie announced his retirement from all rugby last month, due to the effects of a number of concussions.
Most infamously, of course, was the monster hit by Ireland’s CJ Stander back in 2016.
Sorry, Pat, let’s just take one more look at the incident:
Brutal.
If you’re wondering what all of this has to do with a Stellenbosch University rugby match between two student residences, fair enough.
Referees are under strict instruction to ensure that player safety is put first, with particular emphasis placed on head injuries and concussions.
Cue this ref checking on a player lining up a kick, only to find out that he’s suffering from another dangerous affliction:
Brilliant this. In a Varsity residence match at @StellenboschUni the referee is concerned the kicker is concussed and if so cannot kick. He confesses he just badly hung over… @thepaulwilliams @brettgosper @BrendenNel @brianmoore666 @Oom_Rugby @jwcoetzee #rugby pic.twitter.com/ncgSzFVDoS

The dreaded babelas strikes again.
Not sure what the protocol is for dealing with those, but I hear that resuming alcohol consumption can work from time to time.

Before we part ways, let’s check out the Carte Blanche feature on Lambie, which aired two Sundays ago and delves into the dangers of concussion:
