Remember that egg that beat Kylie Jenner out of the top spot for the most-liked Instagram post of all time?
Of course, you do, you probably ‘liked it’. A lot of people did – over 52 million of them, in fact.
Since the egg went viral, two questions have been on everyone’s minds: what does the egg mean and who created it? We have the answers to both of those questions here.
First off, the egg started to crack a little while ago, which suggested that something could be inside it. Here’s Vox:
It turns out that having the most-liked post on Instagram is a lucrative opportunity. And shortly after the egg secured its world record, it began to tease some sort of big reveal — eventually promising a Super Bowl Sunday payoff.
As the egg’s cracks spread, a number of marketing agencies began to claim — some falsely — that they were working with the egg’s account holder to pursue various opportunities.
Among those falsely laying claim to the egg was Jerry Media, now infamous as the social media agency responsible for promoting 2017’s disastrous Fyre Festival.
Finally, the egg broke on Hulu, revealing the following message:
“Take care of your mental health” – mystery one solved. A little anti-climatic, but a good message regardless. I was hoping for a dragon.
Now for mystery two: the man behind the egg, courtesy of The Daily Standard:
The man behind the Instagram Egg, the world’s most popular post with over 52 million likes, was revealed today as a London advertising professional.
Chris Godfrey, 29, (above) who works for creative agency The & Partnership in central London, said he posted the picture as an experiment to see if “something as universal and simple as an egg” could beat the then-record breaking image of Kylie Jenner’s new born daughter Stormi.
Godfrey said that he picked an egg because “An egg has no gender, race or religion. An egg is an egg, it’s universal.”
Mr Godfrey has since enlisted the help of two friends Alissa Khan-Whelan, 26 and CJ Brown, 29, to help run the egg account.
Ms Khan-Whelan told the New York Times they decided to “put any speculation to bed” by revealing their identities now.
Fantastic. Props for using the egg for a good cause.
Have an EGG-cellent day further.
