A massively popular TV genre for more than two decades, home makeover shows remain as beloved as ever.
Whether you’re about to buy your first home or are years away from owning property, there’s nothing more satisfying than watching an interior space go from drab bordering on hideous to Instagrammable.
Since Extreme Makeover: Home Edition ran, screaming hysterically onto our screens back in 2002, the genre has come a long way.
Like most things, it’s moved from TV to YouTube, where it’s now possible to become an internet sensation and live off the proceeds.
Channels like Nifty show you how to DIY your space with a few easy crafts and upcycles, there’s an entire genre of videos dedicated to watching people clean and tidy their homes (#cleanwithme), and finally, there’s Mr. Kate, which I have been binge watching for around two weeks straight now.
Mr. Kate is Kate Albrecht, an actress and writer, known for My Best Friend’s Girl (2008), The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement (2004) and Entourage (2004).
Her channel has over three million subscribers on YouTube. If you can get past the world’s most annoying theme song(s), you get to enjoy a series of incredible makeovers grouped into series.
OMG We’re Coming Over follows Mr. Kate and her husband Joey Zehr as they makeover the homes of YouTube celebrities.
Try not to curse the gods that you didn’t try for a career on YouTube when you see the houses that 19-year-olds bought with the funds they earned doing make-up tutorials:
Then there’s a series of office makeovers, where Kate and Joey attempt to give small businesses or charity organisations the aesthetic they need to up their game:
You can also watch Kate and Joey makeover their own house, the houses of others who really need their help, and my personal favourite – Mr. Kate Decorates, where Kate and Joey makeover a room for under $300:
So if you need/ want/ have to have some easy watching after a tough day at work, check out their YouTube channel.
Go on – embrace your inner creative weirdo.
