They might be one of South Africa’s foremost brand when it comes to satirical advertising, but Nando’s aren’t faring so well when it comes to taking care of their chickens.

The famous chicken restaurant was assessed by World Animal Protection (WAP) alongside eight other food franchises, most of them American, and came third to last behind KFC.

That’s right, that genetically modified “chicken” they sell at KFC is more ethically produced than Nando’s. Let that sink in.

WAP claimed that despite making “billions of dollars from chickens, these huge companies are doing very little to give them better lives”… and that fast food isn’t worth the needless suffering of billions of chickens.

“Our comprehensive report has revealed the shocking lack of commitment or care by these billion-dollar fast food companies. The ruthless exploitation of chickens for profit is unacceptable,” said WAP.

The companies, including Burger King, Subway, Pizza Hut and Domino’s, were rated according to three criteria:

1. Their policies regarding the protection of chicken welfare.
2. Their targets to complete action to improve chickens’ lives.
3. How well the company is reporting on its progress to improve chicken welfare.

The report identifies six common problems:

1. The chickens are bred to grow too quickly
2. Their living areas are overcrowded
3. Their cages severely restrict their movement
4. The living environment is unhealthy
5. Unnatural lighting
6. “Squalid” conditions

Here’s the full list of companies investigated. Nando’s ‘chicken conditions’ are the second worst, with only Domino’s scoring lower:

Each company was given a grade from ‘failing’ to ‘very good’. Nobody cracked a ‘very good’ or even a ‘good’.

It’s not all bad, though.

Seven of the nine companies – including Nando’s – do use third party auditors in certain locations to check compliance with their company chicken welfare standards, and WAP says “thankfully industry is beginning to embrace these solutions”.

Nearly 100 companies have already committed to improving the lives of chickens within the next few years.

Still, Nando’s – not a good look.
