Mark Nicholas is a fine cricket commentator, and he’s certainly easier to listen to than a certain Kevin Pietersen.
That being said, during the recently concluded third test match between the Proteas and Pakistan at the Wanderers, he was involved in an on-air gaffe that was quickly picked up on across social media.
The incident happened on Friday, when two people with dwarfism were filmed during a break in play, with this from Stuff:
The pair were bowling and batting on the outfield much to the delight of spectators.
When cameras zoomed in on the action, Nicholas said: “Okay well, it’s important to start young.”
As one of the dwarfs turned to bowl with an accomplished left-arm spin motion, Nicholas was still oblivious to his mistake, adding: “Look at this … spin it. Oh, I like that!”
Fellow commentator Kevin Pietersen, England’s former South African batsman, could only laugh at Nicholas.
Of course he did, because KP can’t go more than five minutes during a commentary stint without descending into a fit of giggles.
Here’s the footage that has been most widely shared:

Yeah, not ideal.
At least the cricket on the field delivered, with the Proteas wrapping up a 3-0 clean sweep on Monday morning.
