It’s called JOMO – the joy of missing out.
JOMO is the anti-FOMO, which of course stands for ‘fear of missing out’.
JOMO happens when everyone you know is out cultivating a hangover at some party somewhere and you’re safely tucked away at home, not engaging with the world, taking some time for yourself, and doing whatever the hell you want.
It’s a beautiful thing.
One of the best ways to make the most of JOMO is to put on your sweatpants, pop some corn, pour a glass of wine and sink into the couch to binge watch series.
Showmax has lined some winners up for December to make sure you’re all set to relax, and here’s Bizcommunity with five of the best:
The award-winning creators of The Wire are back with season two of this critically acclaimed drama that follows the rise of the porn industry in the States.
In season two, porn is legal and growing as an industry alongside mafia bankrollers – and where there’s money, there’s trouble.
This addictive four-part miniseries will keep you hooked as you follow Sam, a seemingly normal teenager whose deep psychological problems start surfacing when a new girl, Chrissy, catches his attention at school.
Brooklyn Nine-Nine Season Five:
If you haven’t seen Brooklyn Nine-Nine then you haven’t lived. It’s a hilarious comedic take on the traditional cop show, guaranteed to make you laugh.
Just watch it. You can thank me later.
Pushed out of the police force after defending her brother, Rebel is an outcast. She takes a job as a private investigator, but her enemies are still after her in this brilliant and tense drama, directed by John Singleton.
Here’s one for the royalists out there who enjoy a little drama with their history. It’s 1485, England is in tatters, and Elizabeth of York reluctantly marries the new king to promote peace.
But she’s not about to fall in line behind the court’s power games, and that makes for great viewing.
If you want to break up your JOMO session with some local cinema, these two SA gems are also available on Showmax:
This controversial film is a must-see. When it was first released, local cinemas were forced to cancel screenings after death threats and protests about its depiction of the secret Xhosa initiation ritual.
Then the Film and Publications Board Tribunal reclassified it as porn (it’s not) after complaints from traditionalists, essentially banning it from mainstream cinemas.
The classification was later overturned in the North Gauteng High Court, and now you can watch it on Showmax.
Described by the Wall Street Journal as “Western genre’s Black Panther”, this film is almost too entertaining for its own good.
The story follows Tau “Five Fingers” who, 20 years ago, fought for the rural town of Marseilles against brutal police oppression.
Now, after fleeing in disgrace, freedom-fighter-turned-outlaw Tau returns to Marseilles, seeking a peaceful life as a farmer. When he finds the town under a new threat, he reluctantly fights to free it.
Gripping stuff.
You can catch these and so much more on Showmax.
For just R99 a month, Showmax gives you access to a huge online catalogue of TV shows, movies, kids’ shows and documentaries.
There’s no contract, no ads, and you can cancel any time you want. It’s also FREE for existing DSTV users – just add it to your bouquet – and a free 14-day trial so you can dip your toes in the water.
You should also check out the deal between Showmax and Vodacom, featuring three months free access to the Showmax video on demand service and three months of free Showmax data in South Africa, which is exclusive to prepaid and contract Vodacom customers.
Once the three months of free access period has expired, customers will then be charged R49 per month for Showmax access for the following nine months.
In total, this means that a year of Showmax, which would normally cost R1 188, will instead only cost R441 – and that’s with the 15GB of free Showmax data during the first three months.
It’s the perfect way to JOMO.
