I just found out that there is another Top Gun movie.
Yeah, yeah, I know I probably should have known that, but the thought of an aged Tom Cruise doing stunts is just not something I want in my life.
Ask James Corden – he’ll tell you.
Anyway, Tom is back in the news, and this time it’s not for a highly publicised divorce, Scientology, or general craziness.
Instead, the actor wanted to make everyone aware of a serious problem affecting film viewing in homes everywhere: motion smoothing.
What’s motion smoothing? Tom is glad that you asked. Here he is with the deets:

According to the BBC, the video was posted on Tuesday, warning watchers that the default setting on many high-end televisions “makes most movies look like they were shot on high-speed video instead of film”.
This is indeed the great plight of our times.
Motion smoothing, or interpolation, is a technique that artificially adds additional frames to the moving image in order to prevent blurring – most effective when watching sport. But many in the film industry hate it, however, as it can degrade the image quality of the original film, and alter colouring.
Director Reed Morano went so far as to start a petition to have it turned off.
“It is unbelievable that this is a default setting on all HDTVs because essentially what it is doing, is taking the artistic intention away from filmmakers.” She suggested manufacturers could work with broadcasters to detect when sports coverage was being watched, and change the TV settings accordingly.
Don’t panic – filmmakers are apparently working with manufacturers to remedy the problem.
In the meantime, just “turn off motion smoothing”, which this article can help you with.
