In South Africa, some of the best fashion is found not on the catwalks, but rather on the streets and sidewalks of our major cities.
That was the inspiration behind a recent collaboration between Sunglass Hut SA and local photographer Fhatuwani Mukheli (from ‘I See A Different You’, a creative agency and photography company).
Mukheli took to the streets of Johannesburg to shoot everyday people, who he paired with the perfect pair of sunnies. It’s a new way to showcase the vibrancy of the Jozi city sidewalks, while capturing the zeitgeist of the contemporary fashion industry.
Here’s IOL:
Mukheli identified individuals in the trendy haunts of Braamfontein, Keys Avenue, Parkhurst and Rosebank. Each person was handed a pair of shades the photographer thought suited their face. These then became the ‘frame’ for the shot, which served the dual purpose of showcasing iconic city spots.
You can see some of the stylish pictures that he captured below:
Each photograph captures the unique personality of the model.
“The vibe of the sunglasses just works naturally with the chosen people and locations,” said Mukheli.
Earl Kopeledi, Marketing Manager at Sunglass Hut SA, agreed:
“South Africa is a country bursting with energy and vitality. It’s also home to abundant ingenuity and creativity. This project was about collaborating with curators who represent the essence of what SA is about, all through the unique lens of our sunglasses, which bring people’s personalities to the fore.”
The idea of ingenuity and creativity, coupled with collaborations with curators who represent the essence of what SA is about, carried over into House of Sun, a physical but also virtual hub by Sunglass Hut.
This features inspiring stories from local curators like style icon Anelisa Mangcu, producer Gina Jeanz, the dynamic musical duo Acoustic Element and MTV Base presenter Moozlie.
In other words, people who, in keeping with the spirit of Sunglass Hut, live life through their own lens.
Early in November, Sunglass Hut launched House of Sun with an event hosted by Mangcu.
The event included a live panel discussion on the importance of curatorship, followed by performances by Acoustic Element, Leighton Moody, Moozlie, DJ Lloyd and Gina Jeanz.
House of Sun is accessible via the Sunglass Hut website, as a virtual space where warmth and style live all summer long.
