THE UPDATE TO THE STORY CAN BE FOUND AT THE BOTTOM OF THE POST…
Naka Drotské, the former Springbok hooker, was shot during a home invasion by armed men on a smallholding outside of Pretoria last night.
It’s reported that he was visiting family when the incident occurred.
News24 reports:
Netcare Montana Hospital confirmed that Drotské has been admitted there. He is being treated in the intensive care unit.
Captain Kay Makhubele said a family had been sitting in their house around 22:00 on Thursday when they were attacked by three unknown men who pointed firearms at them.
“There was a struggle whereby one of the men was shot at,” he said.
Drotske and his business partner Os du Randt [both are pictured above] had been having a braai at his brother’s smallholding in Kameeldrift when armed men stormed in, said the friend, who spoke on condition of anonymity.
Shots were apparently also fired at Du Randt but he is believed to have escaped injury.
The friend said he had heard that in the rush to get to hospital, the men were apparently also involved in an accident.
According to News24’s information Drotské was shot three times attempting to protect his family from the attackers. His wife is by his side at the hospital.
They also report that Naka lost “almost a third of his blood”, has already been operated on, and “needs to be stabilised before another operation on an injured arm can be performed”.
Thankfully, Sport24 are reporting good news regarding Naka’s condition:
[Cheetahs CEO Harold] Verster said the entire Cheetahs community had been rocked by the news.
“From what we hear it is stable and they think it is okay,” Verster said.
“I had a chat with Os this morning. He is okay. He said it was like a war zone with shots going off everywhere … he said it was chaos.
“We’re just totally shocked and we hope that Naka will recover and that Os is okay … they are friends and legends of the region”.
Drotske was capped 26 times by the Springboks, and was also a member of the 1995 Rugby World Cup-winning team.

“Naka Drotské saved my children’s lives.”
That is what Tinus Drotské, brother of the former Springbok rugby player, told Naka’s wife, Marzanne, after he was shot three times during a home invasion on Thursday night in Pretoria…
“Naka jumped up and stormed them, and then they shot him three times, and then they luckily fled. The children, no-one else was harmed,” said Tinus…
[Naka] was shot in the right side of the chest, stomach and right arm. Du Randt raced Naka to hospital, but veered off the road, causing two tyres to burst in the race to get medical help.
Marzanne said: “Two guys luckily picked them up and took them to the hospital.”
Naka is being treated at Montana Hospital in the capital.
“They are trying to stabilise him. He lost an awful lot of blood … They will have to fix his right elbow because everything there is fractured,” Marzanne said.
Sounds like some heroic action on the part of Naka, and here’s hoping he has a speedy recovery.
