Great news for fans of space and everything space-related: high definition has found its way to the International Space Station.
A new video from NASA shows the astronauts on the Space Station living, working, and conducting research. This is interspersed with some of the clearest and most impressive shots of Earth to ever grace our screens.
If you thought that the proof that there’s a black hole in the centre of our galaxy was impressive, then you’ll love this.
The visuals are so clear that if you load this up on a decently-sized flatscreen, you’ll feel like you’re floating right beside them.
The footage was captured using a RED Helium 8K camera. Take a look:
According to PetaPixel, NASA has a history of pushing boundaries when it comes to camera technologies. The ISS has previously sent HD cameras, 3D cameras, and a 4K camera.
The RED Helium 8K used for this project was delivered to the ISS back in April by the SpaceX cargo resupply mission. It’s the same camera that was used to shoot recent Hollywood movies such as The Hobbit trilogy and Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2.
“This new footage showcases the story of human spaceflight in more vivid detail than ever before,” says NASA communications manager Dylan Mathis. “The world of camera technology continues to progress, and seeing our planet in high fidelity is always welcome. We’re excited to see what imagery comes down in the future.”
An 8K screen is necessary to experience the full effect of the video, but it’s still pretty impressive even if you don’t have the required tech.
