When it comes to air safety videos, Air New Zealand really are leading the way.
I’m not sure if their passengers are also forced to sit through those painful ‘your exits are here, here and here’ displays we see on SAA and other local airlines, but at least they make the video part of the ordeal rather entertaining.
Following on from their Christmas effort last year, the airline is back with another effort, and this one is distinctly and proudly Kiwi.
Below from Stuff:
…its latest video features an all-Kiwi cast of 600 comprised of teen actor extraordinaire and natural comedian Julian Dennison, established and rising musicians, a troupe of high school hip hop dancers and (gasp!) a good many “ordinary” New Zealanders. If you can call the curlers of Naseby, brass band members of Mosgiel and back-flipping, booty-shaking St Clair surf lifesavers ordinary that is (we certainly wouldn’t dare).
Styled like a music video, It’s Kiwis Safety is set to the tune of In the Neighbourhood by nineties New Zealand hip hop and R&B duo Sisters Underground and a Kiwified version of Run DMC’s 1986 hip hop hit Get Tricky.
I mean yeah, more power to you, Kiwi people.
Here’s the video:
Plot twist – not everybody in New Zealand is digging this vibe:
At the time of writing over 2500 people had voted in our poll with 43 per cent branding it “one of the best”, 29 per cent thought it was “OK” and 28 per cent calling it “terrible”…
“Smart, fast paced, snappy, great as a music video but as a safety video? Terrible! Persons with a good grasp of English will be able to follow it, but what about those people who English is their 2nd language? A safety video needs to be clear, concise and to the point, unfortunately this video is not any of those,” writes ‘Heres2cents’…
While on Twitter another wrote: “Love it and I love the use of our talented Young People who need more and more to be celebrated not continually put down and ignored … well done Air NZ.”
Don’t hold your breath for an SAA effort any time soon, given that they have no money, and have lost about R18 billion in the past four financial years.
