Teenagers are the worst.
Teenagers trying to outdo each other at the matric dance takes being the worst to a whole new level, especially when it’s happening on the taxpayer’s dime.
In Newcastle, KZN, over the weekend, a couple arrived at their matric farewell in a police Nyala vehicle, escorted by six public order police officers.
A video of the event has since gone viral on social media. You can watch the spectacle here, and prepare to roll your eyes more than once:
Social media users, reports News24, were not impressed with the misuse of state vehicles. Word reached the relevant police channels:
Acting KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi condemned the use of a public order policing vehicle and manpower at the matric farewell.
“I am deeply disturbed by what I observed. I have instructed that these police officials that appear in that video be investigated in terms of our disciplinary regulations as their conduct is not in line with our code of conduct and the objectives of the SAPS as per the Constitution of this country,” he said in a statement.
According to East Coast Radio, the incident is being investigated.
[The commissioner] is concerned as his office was not informed of such an exercise, so we do not know who is behind it and at what basis they were deployed at this matric farewell,” said Naicker.
Good to see that the left hand knows what the right hand is doing in the SAPS. As for the students present at the event, one of them had the following to say about the unconventional escort:
“It is a criminal offence to look this good.
“Arrest them po po!”
Classy.
