Rest easy, everyone, it’s finally happened.
Until yesterday, I had no idea that a creature dubbed the “headless chicken sea monster” even existed, and now I’m watching footage of this rather odd animal frolicking deep underwater.
Not to body shame the poor thing, but it’s certainly odd looking.
According to the BBC:
A deep-sea swimming sea cucumber has been filmed in the Southern Ocean off East Antarctica for the first time.
Real name Enypniastes eximia, commonly known as the “headless chicken sea monster”, the creature had previously only been seen in the Gulf of Mexico.
Data from the underwater cameras will be fed back to the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources, the international body managing the Southern Ocean.
That body is currently meeting in Hobart, where the commissioner will push for a new East Antarctic marine protected area.
Good news for the cucumber:
I feel like the name’s a bit harsh.
