By now you’ve heard about Banksy’s painting shredding stunt at Sotheby’s in London.
If not, here’s the short version. Banksy rigged a frame with a shredder that would destroy his famous “Girl with Balloon” painting if it was ever auctioned.
When the painting sold at a Sotheby’s auction earlier this year, it started shredding itself, shocking the crowd. The winning bidder, a European collector, went ahead and bought it anyway for $1,4 million, reports TIME.
The painting only partially shredded, which led to speculation that the stunt was orchestrated to increase the value of the artwork. Now Banksy has released a new video which suggests that the shredder actually malfunctioned:
The end of the new video notes: “In rehearsals it worked every time…” A complete shredding of the same design is then shown.
The nearly 3-minute long video is titled, “Shred the Love, the Director’s cut.” It shows hands and a hooded figure (Banksy is fond of hoodies) constructing the mechanism in a studio space, then it rolls on to the outside of Sotheby’s before the auction. People milling about sipping Champagne and nibbling hors d’oeuvres are next up, including some standing in front of the painting.
The partial shredding is also shown, as is the work being removed from the wall and taken away.
Win some, lose some, I guess.
