Congrats, Spotify, you’ve made it to the double-digits age.
The music-streaming service kicked off on October 7, 2008, when Daniel Ek and Martin Lorentzon, along with a group of other executives, went live.
It’s been a case of going from strength to strength since then, and the service now boasts 180 million active monthly users – including South Africans, finally.
To celebrate 10 years in the business, they released three lists that detail whose music stands out from the rest.
We will start with the Top Streamed Artists of All Time, via DMN:
1. Drake
Ed Sheeran
Eminem
The Weeknd
Rihanna
Kanye West
Coldplay
Justin Bieber
Calvin Harris
10. Ariana Grande
That’s Drake in top spot as the most streamed artist, and Ariana Grande just cracking the top 10.
Have a guess at what titles are making the Top Streamed Songs of All Time list.

Anybody noticing the fact that there isn’t a single female artist on that list? There is a little bit of good news
Rihanna also became the first artist to reach 1 billion streams on Spotify, achieving the feat in 2013. Rihanna also emerged as the most-streamed female artist on Spotify.
Good job, Riri.
As for the most streamed song of each year:
The Killers’ ‘Human’ took the top spot in Spotify’s inaugural year. In 2009, the honor went to The Black Eyed Peas for ‘I Gotta Feeling.’
In 2010, Eminem and Rihanna’s ‘Love The Way You Lie’ emerged as the most-streamed song. A year later, Don Omar and Lucenzo’s ‘Danza Kuduro’ took the top spot. In 2012, Gotye and Kimbra’s ‘Somebody That I Used To Know’ was the most-streamed song, followed by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis’ ‘Can’t Hold Us’ featuring Ray Dalton the next year.
Thanks to the success of Despicable Me 2 in theaters, Pharrell Williams’ ‘Happy’ became Spotify’s most-streamed song in 2014. Then, in 2015, listeners on the service streamed Major Lazer, MO, and DJ Snake’s ‘Lean On’ the most. Drake’s ‘One Dance’ was the most-streamed song in 2016, followed by Ed Sheeran’s ‘Shape of You’ a year later.
If you’re silently judging this generation’s choice of music, I can assure you that you’re not alone.
