Financing a movie via independent means is never easy, and even more so here in South Africa.
For that reason, we should always do our utmost to support the local scene, and movies don’t come much more local than Cut-Out Girls.
You’ll recognise many of the locations in the film, which was shot in and around Cape Town over 21 days in July 2017. Post-production then started in September, and now we’re rapidly approaching the release date.
Via the film’s official website, some deets:
Cut-Out Girls is loosely based on an award winning stage play by Nicola Hanekom that deals with the uneasy subject of date rape. ‘After working with this special group of young actors, I decided to develop the script into a feature film’.
A true labour of love, Cut-Out Girls’ filming was funded in part by an Indiegogo campaign. Equipment and gear was sponsored and a skeleton crew put together to bring this story to life.
Producer Grant Swanby says, ‘It was a truly tough process. Everybody was very generous and helped where they could’. Talented young cinematographer Brett Rayner was brought in, and adds a fresh vision to the project.
A portion of the funds raised from the proceeds of the film will go towards Rape Crisis, an NPO.
The official trailer was uploaded earlier this week:
Sadly, the movie’s central theme is something that far too many South Africans can relate to.
