When the #MeToo movement broke with allegations against Harvey Weinstein, the extent of sexual assault and violence in Hollywood became apparent in a way that could no longer be ignored.
At the forefront of the movement was actress Rose McGowan, who came forward with allegations of rape against Weinstein.
McGowan has had a long and difficult battle in the year since then, receiving backlash from Weinstein supporters and superfans.
Now she is claiming that the movement is “bullshit” in an unexpected attack on #MeToo, reports COMPLEX.
“It’s all bullshit,” the activist and actress said. “It’s a lie. It’s a Band-Aid lie to make them feel better.”
…“I know these people, I know they’re lily-livered, and as long as it looks good on the surface, to them, that’s enough.” she said of Hollywood activists. “They’re not champions. I just think they’re losers.”
It’s not the first time that McGowan has attacked her co-stars for what she sees as insincere behaviour.
In an interview with Nightline earlier this year, McGowan jumped on her Charmed co-star Alyssa Milano and said that her support of #MeToo and the Time’s Up movement were all done in the name of publicity.
“Do you think I don’t know these people? Do the math,” she said. “Who’s behind Time’s Up? CAA. Where do they meet? CAA? Who needs good PR? CAA. Who are part of the pimp problem? CAA.”
According to the Hollywood Reporter, she claims to have been excluded from “#MeToo campaign lunches” and “survivors’ brunches”. McGowan also points out that she received limited support from women’s magazines, whereas GQ made her Man of The Year.
She is also denying the testimonies of women close to Weinstein who claimed to have known nothing about his actions.
McGowan also claims that it is “literally impossible” that Meryl Streep didn’t know about Weinstein’s alleged behavior before the claims became public, as Streep claimed; nor does she believe that Hillary Clinton, whom Weinstein supported and was friendly with, didn’t know.
“I would take my years of support back [if I could],” McGowan said of Clinton. “Vociferous support. Even against Obama, I backed her.” Asked jokingly if she’d ever run for office, McGowan replied seriously: “Yes. And I would run as a Republican. Just to fuck it up. Just to blow people’s minds.”
To put things into context, McGowan appears to be going after Hollywood, not the #MeToo movement as a whole. Still, her rants are unsettling at a time when the movement needs to maintain momentum in the wake of the Brett Kavanaugh appointment.
It seems important to note here that survivors of rape and sexual assault process their experiences in different ways, and that anger can manifest in different ways. It isn’t unusual for someone to feel isolated and misunderstood, especially when their experiences are subject to public scrutiny.
