Last night, Manchester United were held to a 0-0 draw with Valencia in their Champions League encounter, and the match wasn’t exactly a great advertisement for the sport.
For the first time in his managerial career, Jose Mourinho has gone four home matches in a row without a win, and Manchester United are now without a win in their last four matches, home or away.
From the outside looking in, it appears like there are serious cracks appearing in the dressing room, and Mourinho’s relationship with record signing Paul Pogba is under the microscope.
It didn’t help that they seemed to clash in training last week, with the incident caught on video.
Former United legend and now TV pundit Paul Scholes has clearly lost patience with Mourinho. Talking to BT Sports ahead of the match last night, he pulled no punches:
During his playing days, Scholes seemed to shy away from the limelight, but that’s gone out of the window since he became a pundit.
To be fair to Jose, when he was asked about Scholes’ comments in the post-match interview, he exercised restraint.
See below from the five-minute mark:
Like most football fans, the thing that really irks me is Mourinho’s constant whining, and playing the victim card. It’s one thing to say that you think some of your players try harder than others, but it’s quite another to moan about finances.
The Telegraph below for a sense of perspective:
United have the highest wage bill in the Premier League and Mourinho has spent almost £400 million in two-and-a-half years at the club but he implied they had overachieved by finishing second last term.
The manager will complain about his centre-back pairing, and how his request to sign Toby Alderweireld was denied, but he has had plenty of cash to throw around during his tenure with United.
Then there’s the man who skippered the team last night, Antonio Valencia, and his ‘accidental’ liking of an Instagram post calling for Mourinho to be sacked.
Here’s the post:
That’s his handle (antoniovalencia2525) visible in the ‘Like by’ section.
Then, of course, the social media apology:
There’s probably nothing to it, but it’s just another loose thread for those who smell blood in the water.
Again, as somebody who doesn’t support United, it’s quite enjoyable.
