Local Seed Supplier Forced To Issue Response After Dagga Picture Spreads

Looking to plant something spicy in your garden? Despite what you might have seen on social media, you won't find it in-store.

There comes a moment in life when you realise you’ve ticked over in adulthood.

Mine came when I was chatting with friends recently, and more had popped past Builder’s Warehouse and Starke Ayres over the weekend than had woken up with a hangover.

I mean, weddings and babies and all that is one thing, but when the weekend activities shift you know it’s over.

Those who have crossed over will recognise that picture up top, with all the various seeds ready for sale. If you’re not quite there yet, Starke Ayres’ website says that they are “a specialist in the vegetable, flower and lawn seeds industry, with over 130 years of experience”.

Given the ConCourt’s recent ruling on dagga, where they decriminalised private personal use, would they start selling dagga seeds?

If you believed the image doing the rounds on social media, the answer was yes.

Here’s what kept on popping up:

“Herbs of success” has a good ring to it, although I’d say that getting goofed tends to reduce my productivity.

In their Facebook post denouncing the image, Starke Ayres had this to say:

Kindly note that this photoshopped image is currently doing the rounds on social media. This is a #hoax and #StarkeAyres is NOT a supplier of any type of cannabis seeds. Please share.

Way to kill the buzz, man.

As one would expect, the comments section was full of smart-arses:

  • Go on Starke Ayres… go green pretty please! It’s just a herb that makes people hungry, healthy and happy (the three H’s). You will enjoy the profits and your customers would be the most satisfied customers ever. You already stock pretty much everything else that a grower could need, now all that’s missing is the SEED! Love Starke Ayres X
  • Is that because your team haven’t decided on which strains you’ll be selling yet? Tell you what, I offer myself as tribute to test any that you’re considering stocking.
  • Why not… Don’t they promote restoration and planting of indigenous flora?.. Its arbor month for heaven sake.
  • Starke if you guys want to I can always sort you out.
  • Lol… and some people were already rushing to Gardens Centre.

Somebody even swung past to drop off this image:

Sorry, everyone who was hoping to pick up some Durban poison seeds from their local shop, although it would spice up those weekend trips to Builder’s Warehouse and Starke Ayres.

Thanks, Sloane.
