The people of Westbury are angry, and over the past few days, protesters have been involved in violent clashes with police.
Community members have been shot at by police, using rubber bullets, and one older community member was left with a bloodied face after trying to broker peace between police and protesters in the Jozi suburb.
The showdown began on Monday morning, when the community took to the streets to protest high levels of gangsterism and alleged drug dealing in the area.
If you want an idea of just how enraged some residents are, this video clip should do the trick. Yesterday morning, one resident “took over an SABC broadcast during a Morning Live crossing and shocked viewers with his choice of words”.
More from the Citizen:
Speaking to LeAnne Mannas from the scene, a journalist named Lopang Alamu attempted to interview one of the residents standing nearby while a number of other residents surrounded her. The man proceeded to grab Alamu’s mic and spew profanities into the camera before the feed was cut abruptly.
A warning that the language is obviously pretty colourful:

How about that shocked look when they return to the studio?
Foul language aside, many people were concerned about the safety of Lopang:
Given how broke the SABC is, I am surprised they can send anyone at all.
I can’t watch this video without being reminded of that time people celebrating Zuma’s resignation left little to the imagination:

Superb.
Thankfully, Lopang later confirmed that she was unharmed, as well as tweeting this:
One of the dangers of live broadcasting, right?
Sadly, scenes like those in Westbury have become all too familiar in South Africa. We’ll finish with a News24 video report put together yesterday evening:
