If the American election of Donald Trump taught us anything, it’s that way too many people get their information about the world from Facebook.
The problem is that Facebook’s regulations aren’t that great. We reported recently on the algorithm that was targeting LGBT+ youth with dangerous ‘pray-away-the-gay’ groups.
In other words, getting accurate info from Facebook is the online equivalent of getting medical advice from Dr Dre.
Sunday’s Last Week Tonight with John Oliver examined Facebook’s shocking “attempts” to control hate speech in Myanmar. It’s safe to say the social media giant failed, and that failure has proven to be deadly.
I’ll let Oliver take it from here. If you don’t have the time to watch the entire thing, skip to the 17-minute mark for his take on the Facebook “connecting people” ad, where he points out, rightly, that Facebook is a toilet.
