Lenny Kravitz has been ‘internet famous’ for a lot of things. His dick popped out on stage once, and then there was that time he was accused of practising illegal dentistry.
Internet famous is different from regular famous because it has a mind of its own. An event takes place, the internet takes over, and before you know it a meme is going viral.
The most famous of Kravitz memes is the one that evolved from a picture captured of the rockstar on his way to the shops.
Here’s Stereogum:
Sexy famous rock guy Lenny Kravitz […] happened to be wearing a scarf so big that you could use it to hide a full-grown elephant. Pictures of Kravitz in this leviathan scarf made their way around the internet and became a meme.
The meme made fun of the scarf by making it bigger and bigger.
Kravitz spoke to Jimmy Fallon last night to promote Raise Vibration, his new album.
As he sat down with Fallon, Fallon called the 54-year-old Kravitz “the coolest kid in school,” which should give you some idea of the tone of the interview. And then a frantically giggling Fallon showed Kravitz the picture with the scarf and made Kravitz say what was going on. Kravitz’s version of the story was not all that illuminating.
Jimmy Fallon didn’t upload the video of his interview with Lenny for South African viewers (thanks, dude), but we managed to dig up this super blurry one for your viewing pleasure:
To make up for that vaseline-covered-lens edition of The Tonight Show, please enjoy a quality video of Lenny’s performance at the end.
