The 2018 Red Bull Box Cart Race happened this past Sunday (September 16) in Jozi, bringing together motor engineering, creativity, and general silliness in what looked like a very entertaining day.
I remember building a box cart with my dad. It wasn’t much to look at, but it had some speed when gravity was applied to it on a hill. Still, it had nothing on some of the entries in this year’s race.
The winners of the race were chosen not only for their speed, but also for their dance routine, which had to impress both the judges and the crowd.
More on that later. First, here’s Times LIVE:
Stuart Turner, John Turner, Marius Lategan and Gareth Turner took home the trophy and said there were some big bumps along the road.
“It was mostly a blur. The chicane was tricky too, trying to get a good racing line there was tough.”
Stuart, John and Marius form the South African Bobsled Team, and said that they found the downhill box cart race a lot tougher than ice.
Right, now that the formalities are out of the way, we can get to why you’re really here – the wipeouts. Take it away:
70 teams prepared for eight weeks to tear down the 500-metre hill at Sandton Drive (one of the steepest tracks ever in the 128 editions of the race). There were four major obstacles to clear and over 37 crashes.
You can check out more from the race here, including some really weird dance routines:
Some amazing shots of the day:
And my personal favourite – Rick and Morty getting shwifty. Enjoy.
