Good news – we can finally stop with the ‘everything we know about the new iPhone’ and ‘leaked’ stories, and tell you exactly what treats Apple have in store for you.
Yesterday saw Apple’s annual September launch event, and the world’s first trillion-dollar company dished the details on their new models.
Via Business Insider, we are diving straight into the phones and what sets them apart.
The iPhone XS
Pronounced “iPhone 10 S”, it is the new version of Apple’s middle-size smartphone, with a 5.8-inch screen and a starting price of $999 (around R15,000) in the US…
New features and improvements include longer battery life, faster photo capture, and a new dual SIM capability that allows the phone to have two separate phone numbers.
The XS comes in gold, silver, and dark gray. The phone can be configured with as much as 512 GB of storage, which is enough to store 200,000 photos…
Who the heck needs to store 200 000 photos, and what are you hiding? Anyway, some of the stand-out features from the XS:
12-megapixel camera – very sweet.
Two numbers on one phone – I feel like a secret agent, or an unfaithful spouse.
WATER RESISTANCE – hallelujah! This one is for all those who suffer poolside anxiety when they have their phones in their pocket, which can be further eased by the increased glass strength to avoid cracks and shattering.
Next – The iPhone XS Max
It has the largest iPhone screen to date. It’s about the same size as the existing iPhone 8 Plus, but with much more screen real estate.
A 6.5-inch (16.5cm) OLED “Super Retina” display with 60% better high dynamic range for colours. That’s noticably larger than the 5.5-inch (14cm) display on the iPhone 8 Plus.
To the features list:
The Verge have a pretty good video run-through, which also makes for a nice comparison:
Third – The iPhone XR
It is a new iPhone that starts at $749 (R11,000) in the US and has a 6.1-inch screen (15.5cm) — giving it more screen real estate than the iPhone 8 Plus, which has a 5.5-inch screen. It will only be released in the US in October.
The iPhone XR is cheaper than either of the other two iPhone models.
What separates the iPhone XR from the other devices is its LCD display, which has a lower resolution than the iPhone XS and XS Max, resulting in a lower price point. It also has a single-lens camera and is made with aluminum.
The iPhone XR will also come in six colours (black, white, red, yellow, coral, and blue) and three storage sizes (64 GB, 128 GB, and 256 GB).
One more time – the specs:
Happy days.
And now for the question you’ve all been waiting for – how much does each cost and when will we get then in South Africa?
To answer the second question, the new iPhones Xs and Xs Max will be available in South Africa from September 28.
Digicape, South Africa’s largest independent Apple retailer, will be leading the charge, so keep an eye on them to stay up to speed.
SA pricing has yet to be announced, but we can get some kind of idea by using the US, UK and Australian prices.
At the time of writing, the exchange rate is R14,87 to the US Dollar.

Handy tip – you can actually trade in your older Apple products (iPhones, iPads and Apple Watches) at Digicape, and use that moola towards your next purchase.
There’s no limit to how many products you can trade in, so go wild.
