Talking about a pupil who had been removed from the school by his parents, he told Times Select: “This little boy has been raised by two very, very, very unhappy parents who do not know how to handle him.”
Two weeks ago, we told you about the showdown at Sun Valley Primary.
Essentially, 59-year-old principal Gavin Keller (above) and a parent, Charlotte Damgaard, weren’t seeing eye to eye.
Charlotte’s daughter Sienna had been booted from the netball team, and the ensuing fall-out saw Keller label Damgaard “untameable”, with the latter banned from attending school functions for the duration of the third term.
That’s the bare bones – you can read the full story here.
Since that news did the rounds, scrutiny on Keller has increased, and it looks like a few skeletons may have come creeping out of the closet.
The follow-up article on Times LIVE has the deets:
A Cape Town primary school that shot to prominence when it scrapped homework is under investigation after “numerous” complaints from parents.
The principal of Sun Valley Primary in Fish Hoek, who has been widely lauded for his innovative educational approach, is also being investigated for allegedly failing to declare his earnings as CEO of a private school and as a lecturer who travels internationally.
Ouch – that escalated quickly.
Keller says he has filed the necessary RWOPS (remunerative work outside public service) forms, which was confirmed by the director of finance and administration at Sun Valley, but Western Cape education department spokesperson Bronagh Hammond said they have no record of this.
Last year Keller’s 27-year-old son, Brad, who also works at the school, was investigated ” over allegations that he sent inappropriate social media messages to mothers, teachers and pupils”.
An investigation into allegations of nepotism (Gavin Keller’s wife, Heather, and daughter-in-law, Catherine, work at Silvermine Academy, “a non-profit high school that runs many of its activities on Sun Valley premises”) by the education department, as well as the forensics unit in the Western Cape premier’s office, found no wrongdoing.
Gavin and Heather are pictured below:
With regards the allegations against Brad, to do with the inappropriate messages sent out, former governing board chairperson Noel Frost said he conducted his own investigation at the time:
“But there’s still no evidence, there’s still no proof. In the absence of that, the rumours have destroyed the lives of a young married couple, and I think that is grossly unfair.”
Many parents also voiced their concern with how the principal worded letters that were addressed to them, a claim that Keller also refutes.
Keller said writing such letters was part of his job as a principal “when we have been through all the steps and [parents] will not see another perspective”.
