16 years ago, Ikea got Spike Jonze in to direct a cute advert that fast became a classic of modern advertising.
The ad was created by Crispin Porter + Bogusky, and went on to win every award in the industry, including a Cannes Lions Film Grand Prix and a Grand Clio.
The ad begins with someone putting an old lamp outside on the sidewalk. At first, you become emotionally attached to it, before you are shamed by actor Jonas Fornander.
I’m sure you remember this one:
Well, after a solid 16-year break, that lamp is back.
Fast Company reports that Ikea Canada has decided to revive the old classic in a sequel more in tune with our upcycling driven times. The sequel changes the little lamp’s ending.
Made with agency Rethink Canada and directed by Mark Zibert, “Lamp 2” picks up where the original left off, but instead of the landfill, we get a serving of responsible consumerism when a little girl finds another use for our hero.
Time for round two:
I don’t care what Fornander says in the first ad, I’m glad the lamp got a happy ending.
