The ANC Women’s League is notoriously bad at representing the interests of women in South Africa.
Their unwavering support for former president Jacob Zuma stands as a glowing example of their incompetence.
Now, following an article in the Sunday Times, Cape Town journalist Qaanitah Hunter claims to have received death threats from the ANC Women’s League secretary general Meokgo Matuba (above in front of a sign calling for an end to violence against women).
The article in question, which was co-written with Jeff Wicks, alleges that former president Jacob Zuma, ANC secretary Ace Magashule and other top ANC officials – including Matuba Meokgo and ANC Youth League KwaZulu-Natal leader Thanduxolo Sabelo – allegedly attended secret meetings at a hotel in Durban, plotting to remove President Cyril Ramaphosa as head of the governing party.
According to Hunter, the death threats, which were made after the publication of the aforementioned article, included a picture of a firearm, reports IOL.
Hunter tweeted screenshots of the exchange:
In a statement, Matuba accused the journalists of “peddling lies” and said Hunter was “becoming an embodiment of gutter journalism”. Matuba has denied any knowledge of the threats and claimed she shared the cellphone with many people.
There’s a lot to unpack here, including whether or not an ANC official should be sharing her phone with many unidentified “peiplr”. But let’s set that aside for now and focus on the story behind the “stay classy” gun that was sent to Hunter.
ANCYL KZN secretary Thanduxolo Sabelo has denied being involved in the alleged plot to topple the current ANC leadership. The ruling party has labelled story titled “Exposed: Zuma plot to oust Cyril” as “sensational hot air”.
The Cape Town Press Club has condemned the death threats levelled against Hunter.
“We will not simply stand aside when journalists are personally attacked and threatened, particularly by political leaders who ought to be setting an example,” the press club said in a statement on Monday.
While the club refuses to comment on the merits of the story, it should be noted that it was published alongside photographs and eyewitness accounts that Zuma and other prominent ANC members were in fact at the hotel, as reported.
Here’s one such photo, showing Ace Magashule, Supra Mahumapelo, Zuma and Matuba herself.
As for the ANCWL – they’re clearly staying true to form and keeping it ‘classy’.
