I’m not sure you can call yourself a Jozi local if you haven’t had a run-in with a Parktown prawn.
It’s kind of like claiming you’re a Capetonian when you’ve never promised to have a catch-up drink with someone, and then not made plans.
We really should have that drink sometime soon, though.
Parktown has been in the news plenty of late, and none of it has been all that positive. It’s where the commission of inquiry into state capture is taking place, for a start.
Then there’s the case of Collan Rex, the former assistant water polo coach, and the ‘code of silence’ that has seen Parktown Boys’ High School in the news for all the wrong reasons.
Zapiro soon made the connection in his cartoon for the Daily Maverick:
I see Zuma still has the showerhead, despite being portrayed as a prawn. Stick to your guns, Zapiro.
During yesterday’s court proceedings at the South Gauteng High Court, further details emerged in the case of Rex, who faces “183 charges ranging from attempted murder, rape, sexual grooming and exposing minors to pornography”.
Below from IOL:
“I didn’t f**k you hard enough on tour.”
These were the chilling words former hostel master Collan Rex allegedly uttered to a 15-year-old Parktown Boys High School learner moments before he supposedly dry-humped the minor.
The learner, who is now 17 years old and has since left Parktown Boys, testified that Rex had invited him into his room when the then 15-year-old’s mother couldn’t fetch him after he had returned from a water polo trip in Durban.
Rex [below], who was also the boy’s water polo coach and hostel master, allegedly invited the learner into his room to supposedly play the video game X-Box and they both sat on the accused’s bed.
“He looked at me and said: ‘I didn’t f**k you hard enough on tour.’ He then lifted my legs in the air and started dry humping me,” the emotional teenager said.
The boy said he was on his back on top of Rex’s bed at the time, where the accused was standing in the edge. Asked by State prosecutor Advocate Arveena Persad what dry humping entailed, the teenager said: “He (Rex) would do a pelvic thrust against my bum. When I started fighting back, he stopped.”
The defence, spearheaded by Advocate William Robertse, said that when Rex testifies, he will deny that the ‘dry-humping’ occurred.
There are 23 complainants in total, who were all aged between 13 and 16 when the crimes were committed, with the trial continuing today.
