20-year-old Sinead McNamara was found dead aboard the £108 million (R2,05 billion) Mayan Queen IV superyacht on Friday, having worked on board for four months.
The 92-metre yacht, which is owned by Alberto Baillères, an 87-year-old mining magnate from Mexico, is docked at the port of Argostoli, on the Ionian island of Kefalonia in Greece.
A probe has now been launched into the mysterious death of the Australian ‘Instagram influencer’, with detectives interviewing crew members and carrying out forensic tests.
Reporting below from the Telegraph:
Originally from Port Macquarie in New South Wales, Ms McNamara was a Sydney-based social media influencer who had been working on the vessel [pictured below] as it sailed around Europe over the summer.
It is unclear what type of work Ms McNamara was doing on the yacht. She had been promoting swimwear, underwear and skincare brands to her 14,000 Instagram followers over the last year while travelling to some of the world’s most exclusive resorts.
Since news of her death, her follower count has now grown to more than 21 000 at the time of writing:
At the time of her death, all members of the Baillères family had left the yacht, and it was just the crew members on board:
A crew member reportedly found Ms McNamara hanging from the rear deck of the boat in the early hours of Friday morning and alerted port authorities.
Attempts were made to revive her at the scene, but she fell into a coma and died while being airlifted from the island hospital at Argostoli to a larger hospital in Athens.
According to reports on NewsAU, some suggest that she took her own life, whilst others report that she was working her final shift on the yacht.
McNamara was due to join her mother and sister for a holiday in Greece, with the duo informed of her death whilst in transit.
At some point later today, Greek port authorities are expected to reveal the preliminary findings of a post-mortem examination into her death.
