There’s a new trend in politics – embarrassing blimps of politicians, and I don’t know about you, but I’m loving it.
It started with a giant inflatable blimp that looked like a baby Donald Trump. The blimp was approved by London Mayor Sadiq Khan, crowd-funded, and then flown over parliament in a majestic show of disapproval for the American toddler-in-chief.
But not everyone could appreciate the beautiful monstrosity. Trump was SAD, and said that he felt unwelcome, and his supporters in Britain decided to take an eye for an eye.
Which brings us to this
Once again, Sadiq Khan has granted permission to fly a giant blimp over London. Only this time it depicts Khan himself reclining in a yellow bikini.
NewsAU reports that Trump supporter Yanny Bruere raised more than $75 000 (R1,1 million) through Crowdfunder for a nine-metre-long blimp, as part of a campaign to unseat Khan from the mayoral office.
Mr Bruere cited rising crime and “defending free speech” as factors in his anti-Khan campaign.
A City Hall spokeswoman confirmed the balloon has permission to fly over Parliament Square on Saturday.
Mr Bruere said the upcoming event “marks the fightback for free speech in our country.”
Mayor Sadiq Khan responded to the balloon’s upcoming London flight in an ITV broadcast.
Unlike Trump, Khan has a sense of humour about the whole thing.
“If people want to spend their Saturday looking at me in a yellow bikini they’re welcome to do so — I don’t really think yellow’s my colour though.”
Why a yellow bikini?
The bikini blimp is a reference to a series of Protein World adverts displayed on public transport across London in 2016. The ads depicted a woman in a yellow bikini with the slogan, “Are you beach body ready?”.
Mayor Khan supported the removal of the ads.
Following its maiden flight this weekend, Mr Bruere says he hopes to send the Khan blimp on a UK-wide tour with the extra money sourced from the crowd-funding page.
So they’ve referenced Khan’s stand against sexism in advertising. I’m assuming the sexism is the free speech that they’re trying to “save”.
Personally, I think he looks quite fetching in yellow.
