The world has become so fascinated with newlyweds Meghan and Harry that even their smallest actions make world news.
The royal couple attended a performance of Hamilton at London’s Victoria Palace Theatre on Wednesday, and Meghan wore a great tux-style minidress.
Hamilton is reported to be the Duchess of Sussex’s favourite musical, evidenced in the fact that she’s seen it three times already. She has also mentioned that Harry hums songs from it around the house.
The world quickly got over Meghan’s dress though, when at the end of the performance, the couple got up on stage and…wait for it…
Harry almost sang a song, but then didn’t.
Here’s the Daily Beast:
After the show, Harry joined Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda and the show’s cast onstage.
Miranda provoked laughter and applause when he said that he had written the King George song while on his honeymoon and “smash cut to 2018 and I’m sitting next to his sixth great-grandson.”
He then handed the mic to Harry who sang a snippet of the king’s signature refrain from the song, “You say…” as the audience went wild.
However, Harry didn’t go into a full rendition of the tune. Instead he pointed to Miranda, and joked, “He did try, but I said no.”
I’ll be honest, I was expecting more, especially because this “news” has made headlines all over the world.
The New York Times spoke about how the Prince “charmed the world”, the Washington Post mentioned that he “regaled the crowd with his rendition”, and TIME said that he “showed off his pipes”.
With those glowing reviews, I expected a Neil Patrick Harris level floor show with choreography. Instead, we got this:
At least it was for a good cause.
The gala event was held in support of Prince Harry’s Sentebale charity, which supports people living with HIV in Lesotho and Botswana.
Harry closed with praise for the actors, noting, “I don’t know how you guys do it every night, over and over again.”
Last night’s event kicked off a week of high-profile public engagements for the newlyweds, who will attend two galas in London next week in support of charities for which Prince Harry is patron.
Point is this couple is clearly commanding a ton of media attention and power at the moment.
