Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, as the former actress has come to be known, is really upping her style game since she joined the British Royal Family.
She’s even getting around some of the restrictions that come with ‘dressing appropriately’ for formal events.
Back in July, she wanted to wear a Stella McCartney tuxedo-stye suit to an event in Australia, but Harry said no.
Apparently, the Queen doesn’t like women to wear pants. No surprises there.
Now, at a recent charity performance of the musical Hamilton, at London’s Victoria Palace Theatre, she made everyone, including herself, happy, by sporting an elegant tuxedo style mini-dress.
Here’s the Telegraph:
Since joining the royal family 102 days ago (who’s counting?) Meghan has been adjusting to a new way of life, and subsequently, undoubtedly, it has had an impact on her wardrobe.
Neat sheath dresses, ruffly fascinators and colour-matched tights have all been experimented with, to mixed success.
But tonight, she wasn’t at a garden party on her husband’s family’s (literal) turf. Nor was she visiting a bridge with her grandmother-in-law, or attending a christening with her new relatives en masse.
She was at the theatre – her passion, her home- and for the occasion, she dressed accordingly.
The tuxedo minidress is by Judith & Charles, a Canadian tailoring label founded by husband and wife duo Charles Le Pierrès and Judith Richardson. It harks back to Meghan’s red carpet days, rather than her new position as Duchess of Sussex, while still towing the royal line.
A swift look back through Meghan’s outfits from life pre-Harry will remind you that this combination of elements – a little dress, sharp heels, a small clutch – was once Meghan’s go-to concoction for a glamorous night out.
She wore a colour-blocked minidress as recently as October 2016, a time when becoming a royal wasn’t even a known possibility for the Suits actress. Meghan’s ‘celebrity’ look was, it must be said, a good one.
The tuxedo dress is a nice reminder that despite becoming royalty, the Meghan Markle we all came to know and love back in her actress days is still in there.
The message here was that the Duchess knows when to toe the line, when to follow the unspoken royal style rules, when to put on the tights. But she also knows when and how to push the envelope, just as we had hoped that she might. And tonight was a prime opportunity to do it.
Let’s take one more look at that dress:
And finally, let’s see it in action as Meghan and Harry arrive at the theatre:
Nicely done.
