Consumers have a right to be outraged if they’re buying fake liquor, but fans of Heineken can rest easy.
Last week saw social media users sharing a tweet by parody account Man’s Not Barry Roux, with many freaking out about a video that was alleged to have shown fake Heineken beer being prepared for distribution in South Africa.
At the time of writing, this had almost 4 000 retweets:
The account followed that up with a video, viewed in excess of 40 000 times:
We have been drinking fake Heineken. That’s why the hangover use to come with Malaria & Ebola symptoms. pic.twitter.com/NoYRZZcBcw

Malaria and Ebola? OK, Barry.
Obviously this one is fake, my friends. The video first did the rounds back in 2016, and has long since been debunked.
Heineken issued this statement:
Ah, I see – the problem is that we were all so darn thirsty.
Given that the sun has finally come out once more, I don’t see that changing any time soon. It’s beer drinking weather, so maybe this is the week we finally taste the sunshine and embrace the spirit of Espiritu libre.
That means getting your hands on Mexico’s most authentic beer, Sol, first concocted in a brewery near Pico de Orizaba, the highest peak in Mexico.
The brewer created a light, refreshing beer made from the water closest to the sun and, as the brewer held up the beer, a ray of sun peeped through a hole in the roof onto the transparent bottle.
In honour of the iconic beer’s history, Sol have named the sun as their official brand ambassador. That announcement has proven very popular across social media, with fans getting involved – and winning prizes – along the way.
