Lena Dunham, often acclaimed as a role model for body positivity, is no stranger to appearing naked on social media and on television.
Devotees of the hit series Girls are probably as familiar with Dunham’s naked form as they are with their own.
On Wednesday morning, the 32-year-old actress shared three raw unfiltered nude photos on Instagram.
The Daily Mail hyped up the supposed ‘raunchiness’ of the photos, which as you can see from the image below is a wild overstatement.
If you look at the entire post, it’s evident that the rawness of the images correspond with the story that she attached to the post:
Today is National Leathercraft Day, National Relaxation Day and National Lemon Merengue Pie Day,’ she began.
‘It’s also the 9 month anniversary of my hysterectomy. I’ve never celebrated the 9 month anniversary of anything and I realized last night why that number feels so funny- I won’t ever do it the way I planned to
Dunham posted the photos to commemorate her hysterectomy, as well as mourn the loss of her uterus and the children that she will never have.
She spoke openly about the experience in Vogue:
…I know it as intensely as I know I want a baby: that something is wrong with my uterus. I can feel it, deeply specific yet unverified, despite so many tests and so much medical dialogue. I just sense that the uterus I have been given is defective.
“I know that a hysterectomy isn’t the right choice for everyone,” I write, “that it’s not a guarantee that this pain will disappear, and that you are performing it due to your deeply held, essential and—to my mind—feminist belief that women should be able to make a choice about how they want to spend their childbearing years.”
In the Instagram post from Wednesday, Dunham says that following about her choice, nine months later:
‘My body is mostly healed and every day I find a new bruise on my heart, but today I offer myself gratitude: from the most pained place, I somehow knew to choose myself. The purest glint of who we are and know we can be is always available to us, calm and true at our center.’
Dunham is currently working on a new show starring Jennifer Garner called Camping, which will premier in October 2018.
