Golfers aren’t known to be the wildest bunch (John Daly excluded), which is maybe why there’s been so much attention heaped on the boogying of Phil Mickelson.
The company that produces his shirts, Mizzen+Main, featured Phil in their new commercial, and it quickly became the talk of the golfing world.
I’d call it something of a cross between The Matrix and watching your father dance after a few too many at a wedding. Yes, there is even the worm thrown in for good measure.
Brace yourselves:
Definitely a novel approach.
Golf Digest spoke to Phil about what went on behind the scenes:
“They showed some of the videos like they had done like with Tim Tebow and J.J. Watt and they said, ‘We have this idea about dancing.’ Obviously, you know, it’s not my—it’s not the thing I’m most comfortable doing,” Mickelson said. “But then (Phil’s wife) Amy said, ‘You should just tell them that you know how to do the worm.’
So after she said that, it was over, we were doing it. I don’t know, I think it’s fun to laugh at yourself, and certainly that’s what I’m doing in this commercial because it was a lot of work just to get those moves out of me.”
Mickelson said the commercial was filmed a month ago in Southern California, was shot in an hour and took 15 to 20 takes to get it right.
I imagine there are some interesting outtakes.
During this weekend’s WGC-Bridgestone Invitational, Phil was often called on by the crowd to demonstrate his moves. He obliged, to rave reviews from the commentators:

I guess there might still be hope for your dad on the dancefloor, then. At least Phil knows what his kids are going through:
“How can you not be (embarrassed), you know? I’m sure they are, but they’re also used to it.”
Honest Dad award right there.
