It’s sad, but it’s true – with the vast range of dating sites out there, if you aren’t on the online dating scene, you probably aren’t dating.
So obviously, what the world really needs is another way for random dudes to send you dick pics in your DM’s, and Facebook is keen to deliver.
The social media site is working on an online dating platform, to make work procrastination that much more anxiety-inducing.
We covered some of the aspects of ‘Dating’, as the platform is known, back in May, but now app researcher and reverse engineer Jane Manchum has leaked some screenshots on Twitter.
These give us some insight into how this is all going to work and look:
If you want a look at the full Twitter post, you can check it out here.
Facebook decided to test the app internally, and their employees really got into the swing of things. In fact, they got so amped that Facebook had to issue a memo (again) about not dating or sexually harassing co-workers:
One feature that looks pretty cool is the range of options available when you indicate your gender on the site. Here’s Business Insider:
…there are two questions on gender and sexual preferences, “What’s your gender?” (options include Woman, Trans Woman, Man, Trans Man, and Non-binary) and “Who are you interested in seeing? (“Women, Trans Women, Men, Trans Men, or Non-binary people.”)
Good news for everyone who’s up to date on the spectrum of gender and sexuality.
Also, if you struggle to make words without the help of emojis, Facebook is also testing a feature called ‘Conversation Starters’. This feature will automatically generate an opening line, making it much easier to pretend to be something that you’re not until you’re officially dating someone, or sufficiently laid.
Obviously, Facebook doesn’t have a good track record when it comes to user privacy, but they’re doing their best to combat that:
Facebook announced the dating feature at its F8 conference earlier this year, which came in the wake of the Cambridge Analytica scandal. The company has come under considerable fire over its handling of user data and privacy issues, and it will need to walk a fine line as it launches Facebook Dating to avoid the inevitable privacy concerns.
In clearly separating users’ dating profiles from their existing friend circles, the company appears to be trying to get ahead of the issue. It’ll need to prove itself out to top Tinder, currently the most popular dating app going.
“This is going to be for building real, long-term relationships — not just for hookups,” CEO Mark Zuckerberg said when it was announced. “We have designed this with privacy and safety in mind from the beginning. Your friends aren’t going to see your profile, and you’re only going to be suggested to people who are not your friends.”
Looking forward to the new blogs and Instagram accounts that chronicle the horrors of Facebook dating.
I’m sure it’s going to be a special kind of hell.
