If you’re a gamer, you’ve probably had a ton of ideas for creating your own game.
If you’ve tried to put those ideas into practice, you’ll know how hard it is to get your game noticed.
For South African students Ben Myres and Cukia Kimani, a glitch in a university project morphed into a game called Semblance, which has since taken the world by storm.
Even better, the game has been picked up by gaming giant Nintendo.
Here’s the trailer:
The game features a moldable character called Squish who navigates a deformable world. In keeping with the Nintendo aesthetic, Squish and his world are beautifully rendered with bright, bold colours and cute characters.
Looks pretty dope – I wonder if it’s going to rake in R20 million in six months, like Genital Jousting, the game from Constantia-based developer Free Lives.
We’re not yanking your chain – check this out.
For Myres and Kimani, the game was a bit of a gamble. Business Insider has more on their story:
They took a gamble, packed up their belongings and moved back home to develop the game from their bedrooms. They also started a company called Nyamakop, literally ‘meat-head’.
Over the next two years, they travelled the globe, demonstrating Semblance at gaming expos in Los Angeles, Cologne, San Francisco, Tokyo and Boston. In the process, they secured publishers, Good Shepherd Entertainment.
“When we travelled we had to stay in hostels with like 10-20 people in a room, all sleeping on bunk beds.” said Myres. “We worked out of garages or just at home desks. We still don’t have an office!”
A major breakthrough came at the PAX East expo in Boston, a conference for game developers. Their game scored a positive review by Rolling Stone magazine, who called it one of their favourites from the event.
Following the launch, Semblance scored positively on review website Metacritic with 74/100 on Nintendo Switch console and a 88/100 for PC.
The game is available for Nintendo Switch, Windows Mac, and PC.
That’s my Saturday sorted.
