Involuntarily Celibate, or “incel”, for short.
Yup, you’ve probably heard the term before, most recently with Toronto van killer Alek Minassian.
He’s just another name on the long and ever-lengthening list of men rejected by women who turn to killing innocent strangers (that Texas school shooter back in May – tick).
Most of the time, though, incels are observed online, and it’s not often you get a look behind the username.
The VICE mini-doccie comes with the following write-up:
Self-described involuntary celibates, or incels, have been tied to a handful of mass shootings in the past few years. Blaming women and society in general, they feel that their sex-less lives are a direct result of social progress. Joey is 23 and lives in West Palm Beach.
He’s identified as an “incel” since late high school, and, for three years, has moderated an incel chatroom tied to the 4chan board /r9k/.
Elle Reeve visits him to learn more about this bizarre, and potentially dangerous, subculture.
You’re suitably prepared:
Woe is the poor man who can’t get laid, and cracks jokes about killing women to cope.
In the words of one of America’s worst humans, SAD!
