When 23-year-old Koa Smith from Hawaii came to Namibia, he probably wasn’t expecting to get a wave that would last for 120 seconds. But this is Africa, bru. Anything can happen.
He hit an unbelievable eight barrels in a row – you know the hollow shape formed by the curve of the wave as it breaks over the riders head? That thing. Check out the pic at the top of the page.
As you’d imagine, Koa was super chuffed:
“I’d like to think that everything I’ve done my whole life led up to that moment.”
And he’d be right, because he was actually tracking the swell several days before it hit, hoping to predict the perfect wave. His publicist, Ryan Runkle, know’s all about it:
“He can be in one place one day, and you call him and he says, ‘I’m taking off for Africa tomorrow.”
It all went down at Skeleton Bay, a mystic stretch that fronts the South Atlantic. But don’t go unless your best mate has been there before. After the flight, Koa took an intense car ride through the desert before a series of unnamed roads. Something that’s common to wave-chasers.
Before you think we were lying, feast your vision:
“There was a point where I was at four barrels and I was already like, ‘This is amazing.’
“It looked like the wave was over, but it formed again. I figured, the drone’s there, I might as well stay on. And I was like, ‘Whoa!’ This went from a good wave to like a life-changing wave.”
That it did. Congratulations, young sir.
If you want the dude’s full life story, head on over to the NEWS24 article. It’s Friday, and I’m about to take a 100m walk right outta this beach.
