Ladies and gents, it’s my absolute pleasure to announce which cellphone data service is by far the worst in South Africa right now.
To say it was a tight competition would just be a friggin’ lie, because one provider comes out the clear, um, winner.
Thanks primarily to its notoriously turtle-like speed, it managed to clinch this highest dishonour, and we hope they’ll bear this plaudit with absolute shame.
Drum-roll, please.
It’s … Telkom!
Are you surprised? Me neither, really.
As Business Insider SA reports, Telkom offers the slowest 4G service in the entire country. A test carried out confirmed these results:
The results are based on over 185 000 tests across 55 000 unique 4G devices across South Africa, for the period between April and June 2018.
The tests were conducted by US firm Ookla, the company behind the popular global internet testing site Speedtest.
Vodacom received a 4G speed score of 30.28, followed by MTN (28.58), Cell C (21.68) and Telkom (19.88).
Eish, Vodacom is literally 50% faster than Telkom, which helped them nail this distinction:
In a separate study by the local IT firm ATIO, Vodacom was also named the country’s fastest network in the second quarter of this year. ATIO studied 100 000 cellphone downloads for its survey.
Damn, Telkom, what have you got to say for yourself? Even Cell C is doing better than you in the rankings, and they’ve been in plenty of kak before.
According to Vodacom’s Chief Technology Officer Andries Delport, the group spent over R48 billion over the last six years to get to this spot:
Vodacom was the first African mobile network to exceed 80% population coverage on 4G and these performance results show that we provide the widest coverage at the best speeds.
Seriously, Telkom. We can’t wait for you to catch up.
No really, we can’t wait anymore. Either get with the programme, or just get gone.
