That glorious stadium above is where Barcelona, and the one and only Lionel Messi, ply their trade.
Visiting the Camp Nou has become something of a pilgrimage for football fans around the world, and the 99 354 seater remains one of the city’s most iconic features.
It’s also not the world’s largest stadium, in case you thought you had nailed the answer.
Nope, that honour belongs to a stadium you’re never going to get the chance to visit – the Rungrado May Day Stadium in Pyongyang, North Korea.
Some sources say it seats 150 000, and others put that number closer to 114 000, but either way, it comes out tops.
This from Business Insider:
The biggest stadium of any non-racing sport by some margin, North Korea’s gigantic Rungrado May Day Stadium puts on massive shows celebrating the country and government when it’s not being used for soccer.
More ominously, reports suggest the stadium was also used as the site of an execution of military Generals accused of plotting assassination attempts against state leaders.
How about this for crowd colour coordination?
You really don’t want to be the person who drops the ball there, because you might just be taken out the back and dealt with.
Nobody seems quite in agreement about the pecking order of the rest of the stadiums, but many lists base their findings off Wikipedia.
Second to fourth place seems to be where the most confusion lies, but Rungrado is the undisputed king.
I would play it this way – wait until your mate has had a few toots, and they’re feeling confident. Turn the question into a bet – something like ‘R100 says you can’t name the world’s biggest football stadium’ – and get them to shake on it.
Hell, unless you’re dealing with a real pro, you could probably give them three shots at it and they still wouldn’t get it right.
Bang – you’re the know-it-all, and they owe you a few rounds at the bar.
Glad to be of service, and remember to support Croatia.
